The Examination

Everything Included in One Visit

A cardiac examination is not a single test — it is five components that only make sense together. Our senior veterinarians assess all findings in the same appointment and give you a clear, written plan before you leave.

01

Cardiac Auscultation

Systematic stethoscope assessment. Murmur detection and grading on a 1–6 scale, rhythm characterisation and heart rate evaluation.

02

Echocardiography

Real-time ultrasound imaging of the heart. Chamber dimensions, valve structure and function, wall thickness — the cornerstone of cardiac diagnosis.

03

ECG

Electrocardiogram to detect arrhythmias, abnormal conduction patterns and heart rate irregularities that auscultation alone may miss.

04

Blood Pressure

Hypertension is both a driver and a consequence of cardiac disease. Measured and interpreted in the context of the full examination findings.

05

In-House Lab — <15 min

Cardiac blood markers, CBC and biochemistry panel — complete results while you are still in the clinic. We begin forming a plan immediately.

06

Written Follow-Up Plan

Diagnosis, condition stage if applicable, monitoring schedule and recommended next steps — in writing, explained clearly before you leave.

Note on echocardiography: Heart ultrasound at Best Pet Vet is performed exclusively as part of this complete examination — not as a standalone procedure. This is the clinically correct approach: echo findings can only be properly interpreted alongside auscultation, ECG, blood pressure and lab results.

D
"A murmur on a stethoscope is a signal, not a diagnosis. What it means — and what to do about it — only becomes clear when you look inside the heart. That is what we are here for."
— Dr. Davor, Head Vet · Best Pet Vet · 25+ Years Clinical Experience

When to Book

Signs Your Pet May Need a Cardiac Check

Some of these symptoms are easy to explain away. Don't. Book a cardiac examination and know for certain.

😮‍💨

Persistent cough — especially at night

A soft chronic cough at rest or after exercise is one of the earliest signs of cardiac involvement in dogs. Not kennel cough — have it checked.

💨

Fast breathing at rest

Over 30 breaths per minute in a dog, or 25–30 in a cat while sleeping, is a flag. In cats especially, this can escalate quickly — contact us the same day.

🔊

Heart murmur detected elsewhere

Another vet heard a murmur. A murmur grade tells you nothing about severity — only echocardiography does. Book a full assessment.

😴

Tires faster than before

Shorter walks, reluctance to play, sleeping more — gradual fatigue is often attributed to age. It is also a classic early sign of reduced cardiac output.

😵

Fainting or sudden collapse

Brief collapses often mistaken for seizures can indicate arrhythmia or severe cardiac failure. This is urgent — contact us immediately.

📋

Breed screening — no symptoms yet

Cavalier, Dobermann, Boxer, Maine Coon, Ragdoll. If your pet is a predisposed breed, routine cardiac screening should start before symptoms appear.

Breed-Specific Screening

Breeds That Need Regular Cardiac Checks

If your pet is listed here, routine annual — or more frequent — cardiac checks are the standard recommendation. Waiting for symptoms is too late for most of these conditions.

🐕Cavalier King CharlesMVD — from age 2.5
🐕DobermannDCM — from age 3
🐕BoxerARVC — from age 2
🐕Great DaneDCM — from age 2
🐕Irish WolfhoundDCM — early onset
🐕DachshundMVD — annual check
🐈Maine CoonHCM — from age 1–2
🐈RagdollHCM — from age 1–2
🐈SphynxHCM — juvenile risk
🐈British ShorthairHCM — annual check
🐾All pets 7+ yearsAnnual senior cardiac check

* Screening frequency is personalised by your senior vet at the initial examination.

Why Best Pet Vet

Expert Cardiology.
No Referral. Abu Dhabi.

Most clinics in Abu Dhabi refer cardiac cases out. We assess them here — with full diagnostic capability and 25+ years of senior clinical experience on-site.

📡 Echocardiography on-site

Full heart ultrasound available at your regular clinic appointment. No waiting weeks for a specialist slot. No additional hospital visit.

🇪🇺 100% senior veterinarians

Dr. Davor and Dr. Maya — 25+ years of senior clinical training. All doctors hold valid UAE licenses. A rarity in Abu Dhabi that directly affects diagnostic quality.

🔬 Lab results in under 15 minutes

In-house CBC, biochemistry and cardiac markers. We begin forming a treatment plan while you are still in the clinic — not 48 hours later.

📋 Clear plan — not just a report

You leave knowing what was found, what it means and exactly what to do next. Cardiac management requires structure — we build that with you.

🩺 Pre-surgical cardiac clearance

Same-day pre-anaesthetic cardiac check + in-house lab. No separate referral, no second visit, no unresolved risk before a procedure.

🏡 Calm, personal — not a production line

Stress raises blood pressure and heart rate, affecting readings. Our structured approach means your pet's results reflect their true baseline.

FAQ

Common Questions

What is included in the cardiac examination?
Auscultation with murmur grading, echocardiography (heart ultrasound), ECG, blood pressure measurement and in-house cardiac blood markers — all in one visit. You receive a written summary with findings and next steps before leaving.
Do I need a referral from another vet?
No. You can book a cardiac examination directly — by WhatsApp, phone or email. No referral from another clinic is required.
My vet heard a murmur — what should I do?
Book a full cardiac examination with echocardiography. A murmur grade tells you how loud it is — it does not tell you the cause or severity. Only echocardiography can assess the underlying heart structure and stage any disease present.
How often does my pet need a cardiac check?
Healthy adult pets benefit from an annual cardiac check. Predisposed breeds — Cavaliers, Dobermanns, Boxers, Maine Coons, Ragdolls and others — should be screened more frequently from an earlier age. All pets over 7 years old benefit from an annual cardiac assessment as part of senior wellness care.
Can you do a cardiac check before surgery?
Yes. For pets with a known or suspected heart condition, a pre-operative cardiac assessment is strongly recommended. At Best Pet Vet, this can be done on the same day as your pre-operative appointment — echocardiography plus in-house lab results in under 15 minutes, without a separate referral visit.
Do you treat cats with heart disease?
Yes. Cardiac examinations at Best Pet Vet follow the same structured protocol for cats as for dogs. Breeds such as Maine Coon, Ragdoll, Sphynx and British Shorthair are at elevated risk of cardiac disease and benefit from regular echocardiographic screening.
